Sirenus rnms nraus. ou. 01 o-u By Chuck Burdick There's no pattern for becoming a swimming champion. That was proved Wednesday as Roosevelt won its thirty-first consecutive swimming title by a wide margin over runnerup Lincoln. The Riders scored 147 points 4i more than the other four schools combined.

For example, double-winners Bill Strief of Roosevelt and Brian Percival of Lincoln have been swimming most of their 16 years. But, Lincoln's Don Berry and the Riders' Tom Throckmorton are relative newcomers. He was a member of St, Pius Catholic Church and member Orville Armstrong St. Pius Holy Name Soci said Thursday, "The Rev. Mr. Dean made an honest mistake lost the breast stroke mark to Berry Tuesday and perhaps-the best all-round swimmer in Lincoln history, also is a junior. Percival, a 6-foot 145-pounder, doesn't look the part of a swimming champion.

But he prefers the individual medley, the toughest event. It includes all four strokes. Throckmorton and Berry have risen to championship status almost overnight, Throckmorton in the back stroke and Berry in the breast stroke. In Swim Class Throckmorton, a 16-year-old junior, was drafted out of swimming class as a sophom*ore. In a year he has become one of the state's best in his specialty.

"I never had any competitive swimming before high school and only swam at camp," says Tom, who is building up his 150-pound frame with weights. He spends about 20 minutes a day 10 before studying and 10 before going to bed on exercises. Berry, another junior, contends he did little swimming before high school. "In fact, I really didn't know how until I was a sophom*ore. "Some of my friends told me not to go out, but I tried it and liked it.

I decided to really push myself." His coach, veteran Loren Graff agrees. "Don's really come a long way in two years. He started doing about 1:20, now he's down to 1:09 in the breast stroke." Biggest Upset Another Lincoln swimmer, senior Jerry Johnson, pulled the meet's biggest upset, defeating Roosevelt's Rich Collins for the 100-yard butterfly title in the record time of 1:00.5. It marked Johnson's first victory over Collins in six tries and came just a day after Collins had bettered the city mark. The North pool will be site of one of two state district meets Feb.
