Welcome to The 9th Age, your fantasy wargame universe, made by hobbyists for the community of hobbyists.

Here, you will find the rules of our games (Fantasy Battles and Quick Play) as well as community support tools and background documents about the universe where T9A games take place. We also provide translations of our documents in French, German, Italian, Korean, Polish and Spanish (with even more translations in the works!). All of these are free and supported by many thousands of active members.

  • Quick Play is designed for fast, simple, yet tactically exciting rank-and-file battles both for new players and veterans alike.
  • Fantasy Battles is a more elaborate game, designed for more experienced players, also used in competitions up to international championship.

We have created 16 unique armies from the Dread Elves in the west to the Ogre Khans in the east. Each army has different units and playstyles and can be represented by 28mm models from any model company. We have created a game that is both balanced and fun. Don't believe us? Try it for yourselves.

The 9th Age: Quick Play

Essence of War is a rules set in the Quick Play game system. It is designed for fast, simple, yet tactically exciting rank-and-file battles in the world of The Ninth Age. Both the veterans of many battles and new players with no wargaming experience can play a full match in 60-90 minutes.

Essence of War First Edition has been released and contains all the rules, Patrols and Army Lists you need to play Basic or Advanced games. Visit the forum to leave your feedback!

The 9th Age: Fantasy Battles

Please note that when both Legendary and Slim books exist in the same version, either one is valid; otherwise the one with higher version number takes primacy. Documents not matching the "x" and "y" of x.y.z_# version of the Rulebook are not considered up to date.

Legendary editions

Legendary Army Books are documents in which we provide an in-world view of the armies you can play in The Ninth Age: Fantasy Battles, with background context, illustrations and armies descriptions. While we do not have a Legendary Army Book for all armies yet, we work constantly to enrich this collection.

We deliver our Legendary Army books in several formats, to fit the best of your needs.


First, we have two document qualities:

  • Online versions are PDF documents with a medium definition, designed to be lighter to download and view (notably on mobile devices). They are typically smaller than 10Mb.
  • Print versions have a higher definition, but are also heavier to download and browse. You can use them if you want to print the documents with a better output. They weigh 50 to over 100Mb, depending on the document.


In addition, the contents of files varies a little bit a well:

  • Full versions contain background about the army, as well as the whole army definition (rules, units, items, and points).
  • "No points" versions have almost the same contents as full versions, but they do not contain pricing information (points). This means that they should not change with yearly balancing patches: you can print them with more confidence.
  • Background-only versions only contain the background of the army, but no gaming information.
