Born in Anaheim, California, Buckley was the only son of Mary (née Guibert) and Tim Buckley.

Having played as a jazz session guitarist, and toured with reggae and rock artists, Buckley was a well rounded musician who blurred the lines of genre.

While in high school, he made friends with poet and musician Larry Beckett, who would become one of his songwriting partners, and Jim Fielder, a bassist who would play in a pair of band with Buckley, a rock group called the Bohemians and a folk combo, the Harlequin 3.

Buckley was born in December 1989 in Killarney, County Kerry, the daughter of Tim Buckley. She has a younger brother and three younger sisters.

"Forget Her" was subject to much controversy because Buckley specifically chose not to use it for the final release of his debut Grace, opting instead for "So Real". A music video was created for the song, compiled from previously unreleased footage, and was included on the bonus DVD with Grace: Legacy Edition.

Dowd, a founder member of LA ska band Fishbone, was one of Buckley's closest friends. After Dowd left Fishbone, he and Jeff lived together for a time in New York, Dowd fielding phone calls for Jeff while he was out.

Tim Buckley never had much of a relationship with his son. He had left his wife, Mary Guibert, before their son Jeff was born. Throughout his life, Jeff was estranged from his father, being raised as Scott Moorhead, taking his surname from his stepfather.

Buckley died at the age of 30 on the evening of May 29, 1997. His death was ruled as an accidental drowning after he went missing after going swimming in the Wolf River Harbor which is a slackwater channel of the Mississippi River. His body was found floating on the surface on 4 June.
