Athletics: Katarina Johnson-Thompson (GBR) leads heptathlon after two events
The high jump event in the heptathlon is the last bit of action for the morning session of athletics at the Stade de France, and Johnson-Thompson and defending Olympic champion Nafi Thiam (BEL) decided to put on a show for the crowd as they both cleared the 1.92m mark to set up a mini showdown at 1.95m.
Alas, despite someveryclose attempts, neither woman was able to clear the bar so it's Johnson-Thompson who leads the heptathlon after two events courtesy of finishing ahead of Thiam in the 100m hurdles.

Athletics: USA also cruise through to men's 4x100m realy final, Jamaica miss out
Smooth as you like from the USA quartet, who dominate their heat and are the fastest of the day with a time of 37.47.
Big cheers in the Stade de France from the home crowd as the French team also qualify in 38.34.
There's a big shock though as Jamaica, bronze medallists at the 2023 world championships, fail to make it through! A poor changeover for the final 100m ultimately costs them as they finish fourth in their heat - and their time of 38.45 isn't enough to see through to the final.
The full qualifiers for Friday's final are as follows:
1. USA: 37.47
2. South Africa: 37.94
3. Great Britain: 38.04
4. Japan: 38.06
5. Italy: 38.07
6. People's Rep. of China: 38.24
7. France: 38.34
8. Canada: 38.39

Table Tennis: People's Rep. of China take 1-0 lead against France
Well, I thought we were in for a close match in the men's pair portion of this team semi-final clash, but Ma and Wang (CHN) eased to a 13-11, 11-5, 11-2 win to put China on the board first.
We're in to match 2 now between men's singles champion Fan Zhendong and bronze medallist Felix Lebrun, with the former already two games up.
As a reminder, the semi-final is a best-of-five format, so if Fan does beat Lebrun China will need just one more match win to progress to the final.

Table tennis: People's Rep. of China take first game vs France in men's team semi-final
China have won all four Olympic Games titles in the men's team event since it was introduced at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, but they're in an early battle here in the semi-finals against the French pair of Alexis Lebrun and Simon Gauzy, who have forced them all the way in this first game - though it is the Chinese pair of Ma Long and Wang Chuqin who take it 13-11.
France finished second to China at the world championships earlier this year, and it looks like we're in for another great battle with a packed house inside South Paris Arena 4.

Marathon swimming: Sharon van Rouwendaal (NED) wins women's gold!
After a monumental two hour swim in the River Seine, Van Rouwendaal breaks away from Johnson and Taddeucci in the final straight to come home and smack the time board with vigour - she is an Olympic champion for a second time!
After winning gold in this event at Rio 2016, she is now the first athlete ever to win two Olympic gold medals in marathon swimming and three medals total in that discipline of aquatics (gold in 2016, silver in Tokyo 2020, gold in Paris 2024).
Johnson's silver is the best result for an Australian athlete in marathon swimming, while Taddeucci earns a well-deserved bronze.

- Editor's Pick
What's happening on Day 13 at Paris 2024?
There are a total of 27 gold medal events on Day 13, Thursday 8 August. Here are our top picks of the day:
Team sports reach exciting end, world record watch
Themen's basketball competition reaches the semi-final stage (5:30pm, 9pm), while themen's footballbronze medallists will be decided (5pm) and themen's hockey tournament concludes (2pm, 7pm).
Will the world record fall inmen's speed climbing as that competition comes to an end (12:28pm)?Samuel Watson's already lowered his own mark of 4.79s down to 4.75s. But Watson himself posted a training video of him completing the 15m-high wall even quicker than that leading up to the Games. That time could certainly fall again.
Athletics: Lyles, McLaughlin-Levrone, Chopra in action
Noah Lyleswill aim to complete the second leg of a potential treble on 8 August as themen's 200m final(8:30pm) takes place. The U.S. national record holder has made no secret of the fact he wants to take downUsain Bolt's world record, and his personal best is just 0.12 seconds away from Bolt's mark.
Meanwhile, Indiawill be targeting a second athletics Olympic gold medal as defending championNeeraj Chopragoes in themen's javelin throw final(8:25pm). In Tokyo, Chopra became India's first individual Olympic champion since 2008 and the first in track and field. However, competition will be fierce as ever from the likes ofJakub Vadlejch, while Germany will have Julian Weber.
And then there's Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the woman seemingly no one can beat. Having set a new world record (pending ratification) of 50.65 at the U.S. Trials, and with no-one else close, she is the runaway favourite in thewomen's 400m hurdles final (9:25pm), but don't count outFemke Bol, the only other woman to have run under 51 seconds.
Sailing: Singapore could win historic medal
The small Southeast Asian island state of Singapore has only had one Olympic champion in history, when Joseph Schoolingwon swimming gold at Rio 2016. That could change on Day 13 at theMarseille Marina, as sailing gets set to crown its firstkiteboarding champions in this new event (from 3:40pm if conditions allow).
That's thanks to Max Maeder, the 17-year-old who is already two-time reigning world champion despite his young age, in addition to silver in 2022 and three Youth World Championships titles. He also won gold at theAsian Games last year to add to a growing list of achievements.

Marathon swimming: Women's 10km race live
Good Morning and welcome to Day 13 of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games!
We'vealready got sporting action taking place this morning, and it's in the Seine, where the women's 10km marathon swim race is ongoing.
We're very early in the race - about 1km down or so - and at the moment Moesha Johnson (AUS) is leading proceedings.
There's a big tangle of bodies behind her, and the athletes are having to contend with a strong current (not to mention getting kicked in the face every now and then).
Marathon swimming is a highly tactical affair, so we will see who has the best strategy to win gold!

Table tennis: Sweden stun Japan to reach men's team final
Wow! The table tennis men's team semi-final between Sweden and Japan has somehow come down to the last game of the last match in the tie.
Japan, the favourites to win this tie, won the first two matches – including a win forHarimoto Tomokazu against individual silver medallistTruls Möregårdh – but dropped the next two singles rubbers as the Swedes forced a deciding match.
Harimoto stepped up again and won the first two games of the decider, butAnton Kallberg managed to take the next two, before coming from behind in the fifth and deciding game of the fifth and deciding match to seal victory.
It means Sweden progress to the final to face either hot favourites People's Republic of China, or hosts France, who play tomorrow morning, and Möregårdh is guaranteed to win a second medal.

Sailing: Low winds wreak havoc on races, medals to be awarded on Thursday
We had four medal races scheduled in Marseille today in thesailing competitions, but in the end only two – the women's and men's dinghy medal races, themselves already postponed from Tuesday – could be completed before low winds ended hopes of any further sailing for the day.
The same lack of winds also forced the cancellation of the remaining opening series races in the men's kite and women's kite events, with just seven and six races in the opening series completed (just enough to hold a medal series under the rules).
It means four medals are due to be awarded tomorrow in sailing, with Friday the last potential reserve day – otherwise the opening series standings will decide medals.
Here are how things stand:
Mixed multihull, overall net points ahead of medal race
- Tita/Banti (ITA), 27
- Majdalani/Bosco (ARG), 41
- Gimson/Burnet (GBR), 47
- Wilkinson/Dawson (NZL), 47
Only these four teams remain in the medal hunt, with none of the top three teams being able to finish on more than 69 points after the medal race and the fifth-place team currently sitting on 70 points. The medal race will be scored using the low-points system, with points doubled for each finishing position (2 points for finishing first, 4 for second, etc).
Mixed dinghy, overall net points ahead of medal race
- Vadlau/Mähr (AUT), 24
- Xammar Hernández/Brugman Cabot (ESP), 31
- Okada/Yoshioka (JPN), 35
- Dahlberg/Karlsson (SWE), 39
- Costa/João (POR), 49
- Mermod/Siegenthaler (SUI), 52
- Lecointre/Mion (FRA), 54
Only these seven teams remain in the medal hunt, with none of the top three teams being able to finish on more than 57 points after the medal race and the eighth-place team currently sitting on 57 points (and will score at least 2 points in the medal race). The medal race will be scored using the low-points system, with points doubled for each finishing position (2 points for finishing first, 4 for second, etc).
