He was an Army Veteran of WW II and worked for many years in the maintenance department for the Blue Ridge Parkway. He' was born Rochester, N.Y. on May 12, 1910, a son of the late Albert Berg and Olga Reich Berg. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Davis Berg.

Mr. Berg was a nineteen year Army veteran serving during World War II. He is survived by two sons, Walter A. Berg, Bedford, Roger N. Berg, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two daughters, Laurie B.

DALEY, Frank Harris, 81, of Ferrum, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2000. Born October 19, 1918, he was a son of the late Frank and Alice Roe Daley. Surviving are his wife, Alice J. Murray was a member of Boones Mill United Methodist Church and was a proud member of the Franklin County Democrat was a retired postBoones Mill Post serving 26 years, member of the FrankCounty Board of Supervisors, representing the Boone District for 16 years, charter and 58 year member of the Boones Mill Lions Club and was the founder of the Boones Mill Apple Festival, and was a 56 year member of Isaacs Masonic Lodge and member of Kazim Temple Shrine. Arrangements by Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, Gretna. New River Valley BRUCE, Robert Harvey, 101, died peacefully at his home on February 13, 2000. Born December 26, 1898 on Stockton Street in Radford, he was the son of the late Robert Benton Bruce and Belle M. Vickers Stratton Bruce. He was preceded in death by sisters Nina Evelyn Bruce, Gladys Evelyn Bruce, Della Lee Stratton Llewelly and brother Harry Baurne Stratton.

His maternal grandparents, James Harvey Vickers and Parrylee Virginia Kirtner Vickers were among the first members and teachers in Grove United Methodist Church. Robert worshipped in the three buildings of the congregation's 125 year history, and he especially enjoyed the Men's Bible Class. Robert met his wife Hallie Gertrude Hutchinson of Newport, when she was a student at the Normal School, later known as Radford College. She died on March 27, 1980. He considered the JonesHutchinson relatives as his extended family and enjoyed the reunions every summer.

As a boy, Robert enjoyed fishing in the New River and taking the neighborhood cows to pasture each day in Heth Grove, site of present-day Radford University. He was known by the nicknames Bug, Yobbie, Sockum, and Bob. Possessed of a sharp wit, a creative mind, and a kind heart, he was a delightful companion to all who knew him. He had a twinkle in his eyes and a captivating smile. In 1962, he retired after 43 years of service as a machinist for the Norfolk and Western Railroad.

Its magazine Paces carried a story of his 100th birthday celebration in 1998. Vicker, a stop on the railroad, took its name from a branch of his family. In retirement, Robert devoted his time to his family, home, garden, and grounds. He was accomplished in woodworking, furniture refinishing and caning and repairs of all kinds. He was a hardworking man who did not stop from sunup to sundown.

His motto was, "Do the best you can." Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Anne Bruce of Radford, Mary Evelyn Bruce of New York City; a son, Robert Harvey Bruce, Jr. and his wife Patsy Harless Bruce of Christiansburg; grandsons, Mark Sheridan Bruce of Christiansburg, Gary Allen Bruce and his wife Nicole Amos Bruce of Kingsport, nieces, Doris Llewellyn Kellam of Coldwater, and Duane Hutchinson Freebarn of Beauterton, Ore. Contributions in his memory would be gratefully accepted by Grove United Methodist Church, the Radford Historical Foundation, The Eastern Seal Society, or the Gideon International. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 17, 2000 at the Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev.

HELM, Mawyer Edward, Committee. He master at a "Mooney," 80, of Elliston, died Monday, February 14, 2000. He was born in Elliston March 18, 1919 to the late Bernard and Lucy Wells Helm. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Conner. Mr.

Helm was a member of the 2 29th Division Artillery, U.S. Army during World War II. He was a survivor of the D-Day landing, Omaha Beach, Normandy, France and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a' member of I.B.E.W. Electrical Union and Craighill Masonic Lodge Mr.

Helm is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Hilda B. Helm; two sons, Thomas E. Helm (Carolyn) of Elliston, Richard K. Helm (Linda) of Shawsville; daughter, Connie Nedrow of Ellis-' ton; three grandsons, Gale Helm of Pilot, Kevin Helm (Angie) of Elliston, and Skyler Helm of Shawsville; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Margaret Evans (Norman), Marie' Ruske, Martha Linnartz Mary Sheets and Merle White (Eugene); and one brother, Marshall Helm (Thelma).
