Someone in South Florida woke up this morning a big winner.

The winning ticket for the $215 million Powerball in Monday night's drawing was purchased at a Publix at 9050 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami Shores, the Florida Lottery reported in an email. According to Powerball.com, the cash payout would be $100.1 million.

That makes this the 12th time the Powerball jackpot has had a Florida winner since it began in 2009, according to Florida Lottery data, and five of them have come from a Publix supermarket. Publix sells the most winning lottery tickets in Florida, because the grocery chain sells the most tickets.

A winning ticket in Indiana scored the $2 million Power Play jackpot, but no one won the $1 million Powerball jackpot.

How long does the $215 million Powerball winner in Florida have to claim the prize?

That depends on how they'd like to be paid. In Florida, a winner has 60 days from the date of the drawing to claim a one-time, lump-sum cash payment. If the winner prefers annual payments, they have 180 days after the draw date.

According to Powerball rules, "ticket expiration dates typically vary from 90 days to one year depending on the selling jurisdiction. The expiration date is often listed on the back of your ticket. If the expiration date is not listed, check with your lottery."

In Florida, prizes greater than $1 million and any prize with an annual payment plan must be claimed at Florida Lottery Headquarters, with the exception of Mega Millions and Powerball prizes of $600 - $1,000,000, which can be claimed at any Florida Lottery District Office.

"We know that some people don’t want to brag about their winnings, and we get that," the Florida Lottery said. "But Florida law mandates that the Florida Lottery allow access to certain governmental records for public disclosure purposes."

Winner's names, city of residence, how much they won and where the ticket was bought are all matters of public record. However, since May 2022, Florida law allows the names of anyone winning $250,000 or more to be temporarily exempt for 90 days from the date the prize is claimed.

It's also possible to claim the prize under a trust or LLC.
