Baby Injured An eight-month-old child was taken by Life Flight to Children's Hospital in Columbus after being struck in the head by a light fixture that fell from the ceiling of her home. Jennifer McClure of 427 North Kennebec McConnelsville, suffered head injuries in the accident and was first taken by Malta and McConnelsville Emergency Squad to the Morgan County Health Center before being transferred to Columbus. According to a spokesman for the McConnelsville Police Department, the light struck the child's father in the head when it fell, glanced off of him and hit Jennifer.

A hospital spokeswoman said the child was still being evaluated at press time but would probably be listed in fair condition. Next month members will be looking at a pay raise for the city's elected officials. That plan was shelved in December, when Council took it off its agenda until the city budget process was complete.

However, the idea wasn't left completely in legsilative limbo. A committee, chaired by Walter Beebe, D-4, was appointed to study the plan and counterplans offered to Council, and to make its recommendations for the best plan. That panel Thursday decided to go with a compromise package offered by Beebe which lowers some salaries compared to Mayor Don Mason's original proposal, and includes raises for council members and Council President Ted Zakany that weren't in Mason's original package. Beebe's proposal: salary go up $5,500 from $28,500 to $34,000. Under Mason's plan the mayor's pay would have gone up $6,500 to $35,000.

Director Phil Phillips' salary would go up. $4,500 from $24,500 to $29,000. Under Mason's package he would have received a $5,500 raise. Treasurer Walter Norris' pay would go up $1,500 from $23,500 to $25,000. Mason's proposal would have boosted Norris' pay $4,500 to $28,000.

Auditor Lois Shiplett would get a $5,000 raise bringing her salary from $20,000 to $25,000. Her's was the only raise not changed from Mason's plan. pay would go up $2,000 from $5,500 to $7,500, and Council members would get a $1,000 raise, going from $5,000 to $6,000. If Council approves the plan, the rasies would be retroactive to July 1. "You've got to pay those people Beebe for said.

453-0378 By CHRISTOPHER BARTON Staff Reporter Secrest Auditorium will stage six performances including Broadway's "Sugar Babies" this season, Rusty Garner, executive director of Secrest, said Thursday. "It's not so much to provide entertainment, but to create a need" for the people of Zanesville, Garner said about attracting bands and plays from September 1988 through April 1989. In what's called a "middle of the road" schedule, Secrest will open the season with the big band sound of the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Sept. 11 and end with "'Ain't Misbehavin'," a jazz musical based on Harlem night clubs in the 30s. "We've taken a different tack this year for Showcase," Garner said.

"We're offering a much wider variety of activity than last year principally because that tends to level out across a market. "Without a lot of market information, it was difficult for us to decide to put all emphasis on one That's why a folk and dance music. group from Mexico City, "Ballet Grand Folklorico de Mexico," was invited for Nov. 11 as one diverse show.
