Why do traders look at futures?
One of the reasons futures markets exist is to help facilitate the management of portfolio risk. Thus, some traders may use them to hedge their equity portfolio. One way they might do this is by taking a futures position opposite to their positions in the actual commodity or financial instrument.
Futures look into the future to "lock in" a future price or try to predict where something will be in the future; hence the name. Since there are futures on the indexes (S&P 500, Dow 30, NASDAQ 100, Russell 2000) that trade virtually 24 hours a day, we can watch the index futures to get a feel for market direction.
Futures trading can hedge the price moves of the underlying assets.2 The goal is to prevent losses from potentially unfavorable price changes rather than to speculate.
Futures options can potentially offer some of the same flexibility and leverage for futures trading that equity options do for equity trading. Futures are tradable financial contracts tied to physical products, like corn and oil, or financial instruments, including the S&P 500® index (SPX).
Buyers may want to hold off when index futures predict a lower opening, too. Nothing is guaranteed, however. Index futures do predict the opening market direction most of the time, but even the best soothsayers are sometimes wrong.
It's easy to get started with your futures trading account! Futures trading generally has a lower initial account opening capital requirement than stock trading. With stocks, there are day trading rules that require a trader to maintain minimum account balance of $25,000 which can be a high bar for new traders.
A forward contract is a private, customizable agreement that settles at the end of the agreement and is traded over the counter (OTC). A futures contract has standardized terms and is traded on an exchange, where prices are settled daily until the end of the contract.
Minimum Account Size
A pattern day trader who executes four or more round turns in a single security within a week is required to maintain a minimum equity of $25,000 in their brokerage account. But a futures trader is not required to meet this minimum account size.
That said, generally speaking, futures trading is often considered riskier than stock trading because of the high leverage and volatility involved that can expose traders to significant price moves.
Margin is essentially a loan on whatever you want to buy while futures is essentially a contract set for a future date and price that can be speculated upon. Futures contracts are typically fixed quantity items while margin trading quantities aren't fixed and depend on the funds you actually put in.
Is trading futures harder than options?
Even slight shifts that take place in the price of an underlying asset affect trading, more than that while trading in options. While both have the same degree of leverage and capital committed, volatility makes futures the riskier of the two. You must understand that leverage can be akin to a “double-edged sword”.
Future contracts have numerous advantages and disadvantages. The most prevalent benefits include simple pricing, high liquidity, and risk hedging. The primary disadvantages are having no influence over future events, price swings, and the possibility of asset price declines as the expiration date approaches.
Stocks offer high-risk, high-reward potential, while options take that a couple notches higher, with the possibility to double or triple your money (or more) at the risk of losing it all, often in the matter of a few weeks or months.
Tradeciety provides clearer and more time-specific futures trading stats–namely, that 40% of all futures day traders quit in 4 months, 80% quit within a year, and that only 7% are able to last 5 years or more. Bear in mind that among the 20% who last over a year, not all of them are profitable, just persistent.
Indicators like Volume Profile HD, Supertrend, RSI, and Bollinger Bands provide deep market insights, crucial for navigating the swift currents of futures markets. Whether it's identifying market trends, assessing volatility, or making quick, informed decisions, these tools are invaluable for any futures trader.

Day trading futures involves the purchase and sale of futures contracts within the same trading day, with the aim of profiting from small price movements. This practice appeals to traders for several reasons, including: Liquidity: Futures markets offer high liquidity, ensuring ease of entry and exit.
Futures investing is found in a variety of markets, such as stocks and commodities, but it's not for beginners.
In addition, there have been occasions when the futures markets have posted negative prices for the spreads between different grades of oil, natural gas and other energy products. These instances of negative pricing were very temporary, and the markets quickly corrected.
Narrator: One use of a futures contract is to allow a business or individual to navigate risk and uncertainty. Prices are always changing, but with a futures contract, people can lock in a fixed price to buy or sell at a future date. Locking in a price lessens the risk of being negatively impacted by price change.
What are the pros and cons of futures trading?
Advantages of futures trading include access to leverage and hedging while disadvantages include overleveraging and challenges presented by expiry dates. Choose a futures trading platform that is intuitive, offers multiple order types, and has competitive fees and commissions.
For example, a December 2022 corn futures contract traded on the CME Group represents 5,000 bushels of the grain (trading in dollars per bushel) to be delivered by a certain date in December 2022. Crude oil futures represent 1,000 barrels of oil and are quoted in dollars and cents per barrel.
With a $10,000 account, a good day might bring in a five percent gain, which is $500. However, day traders also need to consider fixed costs such as commissions charged by brokers. These commissions can eat into profits, and day traders need to earn enough to overcome these fees [2].
Just as how long you have to wait to sell a stock after buying it, there is no legal limit on the number of times you can buy and sell the same stock in one day. Again, though, your broker may impose restrictions based on your account type, available capital, and regulatory rules regarding 'Pattern Day Traders'.
This can be a risky form of trading, but it also has the potential to generate large profits. If you are starting with a small amount of capital, such as $10 to $100, it is still possible to make money on futures trading.
